Local Teen's Mangled Body Found Washed Ashore
The Amity Village Police Department is investigating the
tragic death of Chrissie Watson at Lucy Vincent Beach on Martha’s Vineyard Sunday
night.
Watson, 17, was last seen alive leaving a beach party with
another teen at approximately 11 p.m.
Christopher Hoggenbottam III, a sophomore at Trinity College,
was the last one to encounter her.
Watson, a member of her varsity high school swim team, decided to go swimming into the ocean.
Watson entered the water at a remote section of South Beach. Intoxication may
have been a factor of the incident. There is no evidence that supports Watson drowned or died form hypothermia.
Hoggenbottam notified police at about 6.a.m when Watson did
not return from the water. After a brief search, Watson’s mangled body was
found washed up on a beach by Police Deputy Jay Hendricks early this morning.
Watson had been severely mauled by an attacker of unknown origin. Her body has
been transported to the coroner’s office for autopsy.
An acquaintance of Watson, Erika Dupervif, saw the
Hoggenbottam and Watson leave together. Dupervif asserts that Hoggenbottam was
somewhat intoxicated.
No charges have been filed in the case, and there are
currently no suspects. Police are continuing their investigation into the
incident
“Though a shark attack has not been completely ruled out, we
want to assure all residents and visitors on our fine island that they are in
no danger,” Amity Police chief Martin Brody said.
According to Chief Brody, there
has not been a shark attack in year’s in Martha’s Vineyard, if there’s ever
been one. Although there is no evidence for a shark attack, a full autopsy for
cause of death will continue the investigation.
Watson was a senior at Amity High School and a lifeguard at
the amity Island YMCA pool in Oak Bluffs. No service for Watson has been set by
her family yet.
